WHY YOU SHOULD MAKE the switch to organic tallow balm
WHAT IS TALLOW?
Tallow is the rendered fat of cows, sheep, and other ruminant animals such as deer. Rendering is the process of gently heating the fat tissue, called “suet,” causing the pure oils to melt away from the rest of the tissue. It is very solid and waxy at room temperature and can be kept for extended periods without the need for refrigeration.
Tallow is the way our ancestors used to use the whole animal, where nothing would go to waste. The fat would be rendered down to make tallow which could be then used for cooking or skincare products.
SKINCARE PRODUCTS MADE OF TALLOW
Not many skincare products now available contain tallow. The use of animal fats in skincare products was decreased and then removed at about the same time that animal fats were demonised and replaced with vegetable oils in our food supply. You are more likely now to find skincare products with vegetable oils rather than animal fats.
OUR SKIN IS THE LARGEST ORGAN IN THE BODY
The skin is the largest organ of the body and absorbs most of what is applied to it, both good and bad. We often give thought to what we eat and put in our bodies but most people do not question the ingredients in products that they put on their skin. People are more likely to read the ingredient statement of food products than read the ingredient statement of skin products.
Skin care products often includes ingredients which have long chemical names and are hard to pronounce. Also, not all ingredients are included on the label. For example, the term ‘fragrance’ can contain a multitude of chemicals which do not need to be listed in the ingredient statement. There is also the issue of the chemical processes to make the ingredients and if there is any residues left as these also are not declared. There is also the issue of when our skin absorbs all these chemicals that our body then has to process them and the effects they have on our health.
We should also be cautious of the terms ‘natural’ or ‘organic’ used to describe a product. So often ‘natural’ is used when the ingredients or products are far removed from nature. Natural means something that has come from nature, that is in its natural state, no processing. Also keep in mind that even though something is ‘plant based’ does not make it better. Plant substances that are extracted and isolated can be toxic.
BE AWARE OF WHAT YOU PUT ON YOUR SKIN
As we do for food, we should also be aware of what we are putting on our skin. As everything we put on our skin is going to be absorbed into our body, it should be good enough to eat. It should contain ingredients that are as close to natural as possible and ingredients should be able to be found in your kitchen. You should be able to read and identify each ingredient, it should not be a chemical concoction of ingredients.
WHY ALEPHIA TALLOW BALM?
All of the tallow used in the balms and others products made by Alephia, are sourced from small farmers who raise organic pasture raised and finished beef. The tallow is often rendered three times to purify it. The tallow is then mixed with organic cold pressed extra virgin olive oil. The lavender and lemongrass tallow balms contain organic essential oils mixed in with the tallow and extra virgin olive oil.
Tallow balm can be applied anywhere on the body, including feet, hands, face, and even lips, so there is no need for multiple skin care products.
Tallow is beneficial for use on skin conditions such as dry, chapped, cracked, eczema, sunburn, acne, diaper rash, itching, and calloused skin. Tallow gives the body nutrients for it to heal itself.
