PLACENTOPHAGY

Placentophagy is simply the practice of consuming the placenta after birth. In Traditional Medicine, the placenta has been used for thousands of years to correct hormonal imbalances, boost milk production in lactating women, heal infertility and various other health issues. The placenta has amazing abilities during the postpartum period; it can heal, sustain, and strengthen. The placenta is an organ made by you to nourish your baby.

TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE INSPIRED METHOD OF PLACENTA ENCAPSULATION

The Traditional Chinese Medicine Inspired (TCMI) method is the oldest recipe there is for placenta encapsulation; it has been done the longest in Chinese culture. The signature of this method is the steaming step.

The steamed encapsulation method is inspired by the theories from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). According to TCM, childbirth can leave the body feeling ‘open’ and the loss of blood following birth, leads to a loss of ‘qi’. This is considered to be very yin, or cold. According to TCM, women should consume warming foods (cooked & steamed foods) to help boost ‘yang’ energy levels. The steamed placenta encapsulation method, is considered warming and helps to promote healing during the postpartum period. Steam is therefore incorporated to create a warming, tonifying, and nourishment for the postpartum period.

By steaming the placenta, it can make more nutrients available to the digestive tract that would otherwise pass through the system unabsorbed. The steaming process is also an opportunity to reduce bacteria that might have been pick up via the vaginal canal (i.e. GBS), faecal matter and/or via the storage process (i.e. handling by multiple people or being left out in the open etc). The steamed method is reported to provide a calming effect and is more often associated with reducing the chance of postnatal depression.

BENEFITS OF PLACENTA CONSUMPTION

Benefits of placenta consumption can include, but are not limited to:

  • Helps to encourage early milk production and enhance milk supply.

  • Helps the uterus return to pre-pregnancy state in a shorter amount of time.

  • Increasing energy levels and promote physical recovery.

  • Helps to balance hormones and restore them to normal levels, thereby minimising the ‘baby blues’.

  • Reduces the length of postpartum bleeding.

  • Decreases post-partum depression/anxiety.

  • Helping to replenish iron levels.

HORMONES KNOWN TO BE IN THE PLACENTA:

METHOD OF PLACENTA ENCAPSULATION USED

The method of Placenta Encapsulation used is the traditional method which is based on the Traditional Chinese Medicine Method. This is where the placenta is thoroughly cleaned with water, steamed (to help protect against bacteria) and then sliced, dehydrated, ground into a powder, and encapsulated using 100% plant based vegetable capsules.

The capsules are made from plant cellulose and purified water. They have zero taste and contain no animal content, so are suitable for vegans. They are also gluten, dairy and preservative free. The capsules are manufactured in accordance with GMP and ISO 9002 regulations and without the addition of ethylene oxide or sulphites.

The average placenta can yield anywhere from 80-150 capsules.

The capsules will be delivered in a sealed jar. The placenta capsules should be kept in a cool dry area like a pantry or if kept beyond 3 months then frozen for maximum freshness. For long term storage they should be kept in the freezer.

PLACENTA COLLECTION PROCESS
